As you all know, Mr Maggie May and I recently moved to the beautiful Cotswolds. There are so many places which people have recommended we visit - picture-perfect villages and gorgeous National Trust properties - but top of our list was somewhere we'd been wanting to visit before we even moved to this part of the world; Bourton-on-the-Water.
With October upon us, and my lovely friend staying for the weekend, we decided to grab our umbrellas and see what all the fuss was about.
Honestly? It's easy to see why so many people love this place.
With a selection of delightful stone cottages to feast your eyes on, surrounded by ivy and flowers bursting with colour, the rain didn't stop us from pausing to snap photos and admire the beautiful houses.
And once you've finishing choosing your dream home, there are narrow winding streets to wander down, leading to an array of gift shops and tea rooms, each luring visitors in with their sweet names and enticing window displays.
One that stood out for us was Bakery on the Water, an artisan bakery with a selection of delicious looking cakes and loaves in the window {and a bicycle perched outside to make it all the more Instagram-able}
We had to wait a while before we could go in, with a queue snaking out of the door at one point, but eventually we managed to grab a table and eye up the selection of freshly baked goods. I opted for the homemade quiche {warm from the oven} with a trio of salad, whilst Mr Maggie May gave their cheese and onion pasty a try, and our friend chose homemade tomato soup with the bakery's own bread. All three dishes were lovely, confirming this place's status as a great spot for a light lunch, and the flat whites we ordered to accompany our food were also good {although they were lacking in fancy coffee art!}
With full bellies and smiles on our faces, we slowly meandered back through the village, eyeing up spots to add to our list for next time. If you find yourself in the Cotswolds, you must make a trip to Bourton-on-the-Water; it is busy with tourists, yes, but the beauty and character of this sweet, idyllic place make visiting an experience which you simply cannot miss out on.
When I was young and we lived in Gloucestershire this was a favourite place of mine to visit.
