I agree, this post might seem a little silly. But what with all the political rubbish going on at the moment, I wanted to write something more trivial than usual, both for myself and my readers, who I thought might be in need of some light relief!
For a long time now, when in need of style inspiration, there has been a group of women who are always my failsafe: our beloved royals.
Admittedly their wardrobe budgets are a tad higher than mine, they carry out a few more public engagements than I do, and I might attract a few stares if I wear a dress coat next time I go food shopping, but there’s still a lot I can learn from them when it comes to fashion.
When the Duchess of Cambridge stormed onto the scene in 2011, it was the first time I realised that workwear doesn’t have to be boring - that with the right pair of shoes, or a pencil skirt with a flattering cut {Yes! They exist!}, you can look not only smart but also actually stylish. I quickly waved goodbye to my shapeless grey skirt suits and unflattering pumps, and paid frequent visits to whatkatewore.com.
Apart from workwear, I’d also like to blame Kate for my Breton top addiction, but unfortunately I think I need to to accept at least part responsibility for that one...
If I’m choosing an outfit for a wedding and I’m not sure what to wear, I’ll often browse pictures of the royals at recent events to see how they have styled things. Although their fascinators are often a little more extravagant than I need, seeing what colours, shapes and fits work together can be really helpful.
Honestly, I'm more Team Kate than Team Meghan, as I just prefer the sorts of things she goes for when off-duty, and also for evening functions. That said, the Duchess of Sussex has put her own unique stamp on things, and some of her outfits in the past year have been fantastic.
I've gathered together a few of my favourite looks from the British Royal Family, and grouped them in to categories, with links to similar products and pieces on the high street at the moment - giving you the opportunity to dress like a royal too...
